Yes, when software vendors upgrade to a new LM-X release, their end users must also upgrade their LM-X license server. To upgrade the server, simply stop the server, replace the executable
and start the server again. The new server will work with existing licenses.
If you don't upgrade the server, the server log will contain an error similar to the following:
FAIL: Client version is newer then server version! Please update license server to a more recent version!
X-Formation supports backward compatibility between new versions of LM-X and existing licenses and network clients to the greatest extent possible. We make every effort to ensure that existing deployed software will continue to work with future license servers, and older license files can be read by newer servers.
Supporting backwards compatibility means that a new server can reuse existing licenses and old clients; however, we don't provide "future" compatibility, where the client is newer than the server. Supporting future compatibility would be analogous to an application like Word 97 supporting the new Word 2007 document format, which would be highly unexpected. Attempting to provide such future compatibility would result in a product that is very complex to maintain and prone to problems.
