You can easily run the license server under any network using TCP/IP, such as over a LAN, WAN, the Internet, etc.
For Windows, the license server will run on Windows 2000, Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista or Windows 2003 Server. You can run the license server as a service to ensure it starts up with the computer and is not affected by users logging in and out.
There are no special requirements for the license server machine; it can be run on either a dedicated server or on a workstation. Precise requirements primarily depend on the number of connected clients using the license server; however, resource requirements are generally low.
You should be aware of the following when deploying the license server:
- Windows XP: Service Pack 2 is required. Releases of Windows XP
prior to SP2 contain several problems that can cause the license server
to fail at startup.
- Releases of LM-X between v1.40 and v2.01 can have problems
with IPv6. To resolve any issues, use LM-X license server v2.1 or
newer.
- When using VMware with LM-X prior to version 2.2, physical
hostids such as ethernet and harddisk are ignored. This is due to the
fact that virtual machines do not have unique hostids, and locking a
license to a VMware hostid gives a false sense of security. In such
cases, deployments should be made on a physical server or by using
ipaddress and/or hostname hostid.
- LM-X license server versions prior to version 2.1 are not supported on Linux 2.4 kernel.
