A good choice for locking a floating license to a particular server machine is to use the Ethernet hostid (the MAC address of the Ethernet card). Almost all machines have an Ethernet card, and information about the Ethernet hostid is available on all platforms.

For optimal security, locking to the BIOS and/or harddisk hostid is more resistant to abuse. However, both can be acquired only on Windows platforms.

Alternatively, the IP address hostid may be used, if it is static and available. Dongles may also be used and have superior security and flexibility; however, because the dongle is a physical device, it can be lost or broken.

Other hostids are recommended for sophisticated needs or when using a combination of multiple hostids. We also recommend using a hostid that the end-user will not change often during the valid period of the license.
